"The Establishment History Panel (BHP) consists of person-related data from the registration for social security contributions which were aggregated on the establishment level. In contrast to the Establishment Panel and the Linked-Employer-Employee Data (LIAB), the BHP is not a random sample but covers the total population. Each year, the BHP includes between 1.5 and 2.5 million establishments. The data are available for the years 1975 up to 2005. In comparison, Establishment Panel and LIAB data start in 1993 only. The BHP's yearly cross-sections can be merged to form a panel data set because the BHP includes the necessary identifiers. Comprehensive empirical studies concerning workplace dynamics are possible with this data set. A further considerable advantage of the BHP is that questions based on regional characteristics can be analysed and that the founding or closing date of an establishment can be identified. The possibility to combine the annual data sets into a single panel data set opens up a wide range of research questions. This article is intended to provide an outline of the data content, data access and possible research questions. The main topic of the text is a description of the BHP base file. I will also sketch some of the future steps we will take to extend the data set by means of so-called extension files. Finally, I will describe a new FDZ project which uses BHP data." The establishment history panel 1975-2006 : handbook Version 2.0.1

"The Establishment History Panel (BHP) for 1975 to 2006 includes all of the establishments throughout Germany which have at least one employee liable to social security as of the 30th of June of a given year or which have also had at least one marginal part-time employee as of 1999. For establishments in West Germany the observation period is the period 1975 to 2006 and for establishments in East Germany 1991 to 2006. The data source for the BHP is the Employee and Benefit Recipient History (BLH) of the IAB. The data on individuals contained in the BLH are aggregated to establishment level using the establishment numbers. The BHP covers between 1.3 and 2.7 million establishments per year. The individual annual waves can be linked to a panel dataset via the identifier 'artificial establishment number', which can be found in the dataset. This data report describes the variables of the weakly anonymous version of the 1975-2006 BHP basic dataset, which is available to researchers for on-site use at the Research Data Centre (FDZ) or for remote data access also. These BHP data are predominantly original data, with the sole exception that the original establishment numbers, which are direct identifiers for the different establishments, were replaced by artificial establishment numbers. The sensitive characteristics contained in the dataset, i.e. German Classification of Economic Activities 93 as 5- digit codes, German Classification of Economic Activities 03 as 5-digit codes, and Place of Work (District), are made available in the original on request and in well-founded cases only; all other users are given these variables in their aggregate forms only (as 3-digit codes or according to German States). This report will begin with a brief description of the sources used for the BHP, as well as the generation and processing of the BHP, followed by individual detailed explanations on the variables of the BHP 1975-2006. This data report contains no frequency tables for the individual variables. These are given in a separate text file that can be found on the FDZ homepage. To begin with, a brief overview of the changes to the BHP 1975-2006 in relation to the previous version from 1975-2005 is provided. This will help users of this version come to terms with the new version." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en)) Additional Information Here you find frequency tables for the individual variables. Matching process generated business data and survey data : the case of KombiFiD in Germany

"In Germany, process-generated data and survey data on firms are collected by different data producers. Each data producer provides access for researchers to its data, but the combination of datasets from different producers is not possible at the moment. A new project (KombiFiD) aims to overcome this limitation: firm data collected by the German Statistical Offices, the Deutsche Bundesbank and the Federal Employment Agency will be linked for the first time. The project aims are twofold: to gauge the possibilities of linking selected datasets beyond the limits of individual labour market data producers and to provide a combined dataset to science, thereby creating new research opportunities. In the following we describe the project, the selected data-sets and explain potential matching problems. In this context we address e.g. the advantages and disadvantages of survey and process generated data and some challenges we expect within the project." "The report presents the first results of combining an extract from the German Business Register System of the Federal Statistics Office with the Establishment-History-Panel (BHP) of the Institute for Employment Research (IAB). This was done in the context of the feasibility study 'Combined firm data for Germany' (KombiFiD). As well as the description of the single data records and their specific features, the portrayal of the results of the linked data formed the central point of the exposition. At the same time, particularly the structure of the combined data was addressed and first key figures at firm level were described. Furthermore, it indicates that the combined data shows a distinct higher analysis potential regarding cross section as also longitudinal section as opposed to the single data." Combined Firm Data for Germany (KombiFiD): matching process-generated data and survey data

Development of a panel dataset from the IAB Establishment Panel cross-sectional data

    Get PDF
"The IAB Establishment Panel now consists of 12 waves from 1993-2004, which are available for research use in the Research Data Centre of the Federal Employment Agency at the Institute for Employment Research. Due to repeated surveys of the same establishments, individual processes within the establishments can be studied in both cross-sectional and longitudinal terms. Cross-sectional evaluations of various waves and the production of a longitudinal or panel dataset require different tasks to be solved. Researchers must check across the individual survey years whether the variable values have remained identical or whether values are absent or new ones have been added. In addition, the measurement levels of the variables must be checked and any differences must be harmonised. Further, the time period in question can alter (e.g. financial year or first half-year). The purpose of such checks is to guarantee the comparability of the variables beyond the analysis period. The above examples illustrate that producing a panel dataset involves time-consuming processing of the individual datasets. This report has been written as a tool to support users in producing a panel dataset on the basis of data from the IAB Establishment Panel. The Datenreport consists of the development of a panel dataset containing variables that tend to be frequently used, in our experience. The panel dataset is available in the Research Data Centre and can be used both via remote data access and during research visits. The STATA and SPSS program code used to produce the dataset is available as a download, enabling users to integrate additional variables into the program code used with relative ease. The program codes can also be modified with the aid of the test data. This Datenreport is structured as follows: following a brief description of the IAB Establishment Panel, the structure of the panel dataset is presented. Next, Chapter 4 presents the variables for the dataset in the form of tables and details the use of the program codes. Appendix 1 describes each of the variables in the panel dataset, also detailing the values and any restrictions or problems occurring. Appendix 2 presents frequency counts1 of the variables used. The program codes in SPSS and STATA are contained in a separate document."
